The Volkswagen Golf is an automobile manufactured by Volkswagen. The Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model in history, with more than 22 million built as of 2003. Considering cars that keep their concept and basic layout (and not only their name) the VW Golf is the best selling car of all times worldwide.
Most production of the Golf has been in the 2-door hatchback style. Also available have been convertibles, 4-doors, and a station wagon. They have existed everywhere between basic personal cars and high-performance sports coupes.
Currently, Volkswagen is transitioning from production of the Mark 4 Golf toward the Mark 5 version. Options for engine and transmission vary from country to country, but the Golf is available in 4-cylinder and VR6 gasoline-powered versions and turbo direct injection diesel-engined models in most places, with transmission options that include manual, automatic, tiptronic, and direct-shift gearbox.
History
The Golf is an historically important model of automobile, as it has been in continuous production from 1974 until the present day. It was responsible for the mass-market acceptance of the hatchback design and created the concept of a hot hatch. The Golf was also a crucial model for VW itself; by the early 1970s the company was in serious financial trouble; Beetle sales were in terminal decline, and car buyers increasingly turned away from VW's quirky aircooled, rear-engined models. The Type 3 and Type 4 failed to attract any interest, whilst the NSU-developed K70 was an unmitigated disaster. The saviour of the German car giant came in the form of Auto Union, which owned the famous Audi brand. VW had acquired the Ingolstadt company in the mid 1960s from Daimler-Benz, and crucially gained access to Audi's expertise in water cooled engines and front wheel drive which were needed to produce a new generation of Volkswagens. The Golf was the central product of this new strategy.
Mk. 1 Golf (1974–83)
VW Golf Mk.1 Convertible, with aftermarket componentsThe first version Golf began production in 1974. Marketed in the United States from 1975-1984 as the Volkswagen Rabbit, it featured the water-cooled, front transverse-engine, front wheel drive design pioneered by the Mini with the addition of a hatchback, revolutionizing small car design and manufacture. The Golf was Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 1976.
While the Golf was not the first design with this layout (that honour going to the Fiat 128 3P of the early 1970s), it was the first to be truly successful in the mass market, and it was this, rather than the Fiat, that was widely copied by others.
The Golf was designed by Italian automobile architect Giorgetto Giugiaro, of the Ital design studio. A version of this original Golf model, known as the VW Citi, is still produced in South Africa as an entry level car.
The GTi version, launched in Europe 1977 and the US in 1983, created a whole new genre and market of car—the hot hatch, and was widely copied by all other manufacturers since. In 2004, Sports Car International named the Rabbit GTI number three on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s.
The convertible coupe, sold from 1980-1993, had a reinforced body, transverse roll bar, and a high level of trim. Golfs were literally delivered to Karmann to have their tops cut off. The vinyl tops were insulated and manually operated, with a glass rear window.
Mk. 2 Golf (1983–91)
The second generation Mark 2 Golf was launched in 1983 and featured a larger bodyshell and a wider range of engine options, including a turbo-diesel, a 16-valve version of the straight-four GTi (as well as the tried and tested 1800 8v GTi), the supercharged 8v "G60" and a homologated variant of this, the "Rallye". A very limited edition hand-built Golf2 variant exists, including all of the best features available at the time. designed and built by the Volkswagen Motorsport division, only 71 of these "G60 Limited" models exist; featuring a unique number and plaque, the G60 supercharger was combined with the 16valve GTi engine, mated to a sports transmission and "Synchro" four-wheel-drive mechanism. All of these special edition models came in black, with four doors (except two in three door), a plain two-headlamp grill (not the usual GTi 4 headlamps) and a unique blue grill detail (not red, as the GTi) and motorsport badges. It is rumoured that two models were produced with air conditioning. In 1989, these cars cost in the region of £25,000 each and were primarily sold to VAG executives and management, although a few do exist in Britain to date (2004).
The GTI was Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year for 1985.
Mk. 3 Golf (1991–8)
The third-generation Golf was elected Car of the Year in 1992. For the first time a station wagon derivative was produced. The GTi variants are considered to be the poorest of the performance Golfs, with significantly increased weight, but with minimal power increases. A "best of breed" VR6 variant exists which was available for a limited time in a well regarded "Highline" trim.
Mk. 4 Golf (1998–2003)
The Golf IV was the heaviest, largest and slowest version to date, but still became the biggest selling car in Europe at one point. The Mk. 4 was a deliberate attempt to take the Golf further upmarket, with a high-quality interior and higher equipment levels. South Africa had a four-wheel-drive variant, badged GL4, which was a five-door hatchback or estate. It was also offered in Asia and Australasia as well, although the GL4 badging was not used in all countries. This model had a 1.8-litre engine.
The Mk.4 Golf was also made in Russia and sells well there.
Mk. 5 Golf (2003–)
Golf V interiorThe fifth generation started to sell in November 2003. For the presentation of the new Golf, Wolfsburg was renamed to Golfsburg for a week. It is expected to appear in the United States in 2005 (model year 2005½ or 2006). The GTI features Fuel Stratified Injection and turbo charging.
Variants
The sedan version of the Golf was the Jetta, subsequently known as the Vento (from 1992) and later as the Bora from 1998, although the Jetta name is still used in North America and South Africa.
The Golf shares the Volkswagen A platform with a number of other Volkswagen Group products including the Audi TT.
The Mk. 1 convertible was called Golf Cabriolet and Rabbit Convertible. The Mk. 3 one was known as Cabrio.
The Mk. 2 existed in a version called Golf Country, a sort of Jeep-ified Golf with higher suspension travel, four-wheel drive, bullbars, a skidplate for protecting the engine area, and an spare wheel mounted externally on the back.
The Mk. 4 variant has a special sports model sold in Europe and introduced to the US in 2004. The R32 variant is powered by a 240 hp 3.2 L narrow angle (15 degrees) VR6 and is available only with a six-speed manual transmission and AWD in the United States. Externally the R32 is set apart from its siblings by R32 badging, a rear spoiler, and a deep front facia. Its closest competators are the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII, although unlike those Japanese cars, the R32 is not run by Volkswagen in rally competition. The R32 is vaguely rumored to return to European and US markets as a Mk. 5 with a twin-turbocharged 300hp V-6, probably sometime around mid/late 2006. By then it will also have to compete with the upcoming Mazdaspeed 6.
In December, 2004, Volkswagen announced the Golf Plus. The Golf Plus is a Mk. 5 variant, and taller than the "regular" Golf. Volkswagen would release the Golf Plus in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2005. The Golf Plus would also be available elsewhere in Europe, possibly at the same time.

HISTORY OF THE RABBIT
History
The Volkswagen Rabbit: The little car that started it all for the next generation of Volkswagens. The year was 1975 and VW sales were dropping. The Japanese auto makers were swarming the U.S. market with little econoboxes far cheeper than a Beetle. The Beetle had met it's fate.
The solution, A small front wheel drive car that was frugal in every way. Behold the VW Rabbit, a water-cooled 4 cylinder, with a transversely mounted engine driving the front wheels for around the same price as a Japanese econobox.
The VW Rabbit was the replacement for the Beetle in the US market. The Rabbit never really caught on until around 1979, when the oil crisis was at full force. The little Rabbit, combined with the optional 1.5l 4 cylinder Diesel delivered superb fuel economy (45 mpg city/up to 57 mpg highway) The Rabbit had waiting lists at the dealership during that time. Production for the U.S. market moved over here to New Stanton* Pennsylvania in 1978. The first Rabbit rolled of the assembly line on April 10th 1978 with NBC news present to unveil the first foreign car to be built in the USA. When production moved, the Rabbit got a make-over for the late 1979 model year. One of the most noticeable changes to define the american Rabbit were the new square headlights. 1979 was also the year the Rabbit convertible made it's debut. It featured the body of the Rabbit but with a soft vinyl top. It featured the round headlights that were on older-model rabbit's. In 1981, the Rabbit got another make-over, gone were the small taillights, the "new" square headlights got carried over from the previous year but got wrap around turn signals to replace the ones previously in the bumper. The Rabbit's interior got "Americanized" by color keying almost everything inside the car.
The engine also grew for the 1981 model year, the gas engine grew from 1.6 to 1.7l , and the diesel now a 1.6 up from 1.5.
The Rabbit never received many changes over the time of production, but it did receive many improvements. In late 1979 for the 1980 model year the Rabbit pickup was introduced, lengthened by about 3 feet, the little truck could haul a lot of stuff. It came with a diesel or gas engine(but almost all of them that were sold were diesels) In 1982 the GTi was introduced, a sporty version of the Rabbit. The GTi came with a 1.8l engine, stiffer suspension, alloy wheels, front air dam, and special Recaro sport seats. Top speed, acceleration, and handling were improved on the GTi. Another edition was also released in 1982, this one was the "black tie" edition Rabbit. This Rabbit featured black bumpers and mouldings to dress it up. The interior had special seats, while the outside got a rear wiper. In 1984, the Wolfsburg Edition Rabbit came along. A luxurious Rabbit, that came with a special interior, A/C, an extra moulding on the bottom of the door, and little odds and ends.
In July of 1984 the Rabbit moved over to make way for the production of the new Golf. The Golf is still continuing to be produced today as the Golf mark 4 (MK4). The Rabbit convertible has also continued to be produced after being re-designed and renamed from Rabbit convertible to Cabriolet and renamed once again recently to Cabrio.
The Rabbit, although short lived, gave a new start for Volkswagen. The Rabbit is still sought after all over the U.S., it just goes to show you a good Volkswagen never dies.
The production of the volkswagen rabbit has still not completely died off. MK1's are still being produced by Volkswagen of South Africa as the CitiGolf model. The November '99 "Rabbit of the Month" was made there.
* As many of you think the Rabbit was made in Westmorland Pennsylvania, but that's not true. The plant was actually located a few miles away in New Stanton Pennsylvania. Production went from April of 1978 to July of 1988 when VW chastely closed that plant , they are sorry now for that decision. A total of 1,192,411 cars were built there.
