The basis for this project was an 1988 Gti 16V. The suspension who raised the car, was carrera threaded body coilovers shocks and struts. This raised the car by 3.0in. The coilover setup allows the spring rate and ride height to be easily changed with off-the-shelf springs. Autobahn used 12-in. Long springs in front and 10-in. Springs in the rear. Adding to the height is a set of 205/65-15 Michelin MTS 100 mud and snow tires on 7x15 CEC Type 169 wheels. For the inevitable hammering the suspension would undertake, Autobahn fit the car with its own upper stress bar. VR6 strut bearing, conversion and urethane rear shock tower bushings. For brakes, Autobahn fit its own ABD Racing brand front cross- drilled Power Discs. ABD Racing rear cross-drilled discs and ABD Racing braided stainless-steel lines. Once the basic concept was worked out, the body was stripped and painted in ”Land Rover green”. The Safari Golf was given an updated look with colour matched bumpers as well as DTM-style side mirrors. Because this is an one-off project, certain items such as the roof rack, front brush guards and front and rear skid plates had to be custom fabricated. Other styling touches include colour matched turn signals and taillights.
Rather than stop at looks, Autobahn built an engine specially for this car. Under painted green accents and polished covers lies a Volkswagen 2021cc 16V twin-cammer. The engine was torn down and rebuilt with a Rev Power balanced and blue printed bottom end. The valves is a set of DR. Schrick 260dg duration camshafts with 11.2in. lift. Autobahn?s breathing program for the 2.0-liter 16V engine consist of a K&N filter and ABD Racing big bore intake. The exhaust system used are from Remus with with DTM-style end-pipes.
The creme? coloured interior was custom-made for just this car. The seats are Cobra Monaco design and are cover in a similar matching cloth. Also the roll cage are coloured matched to the interior.
